The European Union is constantly reinventing its strategic perspective regarding the energy markets, aiming to adopt Green actions, based on economical insight, which ensure sustainability, competitiveness and security for both companies and consumers. In light of this reality, Expo Media has conceived a niche international conference, Energy Strategy and Perspectives in the European Union - Implications for South Eastern Europe.
Overview
European energy policy has developed in the last decade having adopted several Green Papers and Strategic Energy Reviews to advance the agenda on sustainability, competitiveness and security of supply. After the gas crises Russia-the Ukraine, the need for a common European energy policy was considered as being a top European priority.
The inclusion of a new chapter on energy in the Lisbon Treaty now offers a firm legal basis for developing energy initiatives based in particular on sustainability, security of supply, the functioning of the internal markets, the interconnection of networks and solidarity.
The challenges of global energy security and energy geopolitics, slow progress in combating climate change at the global level, the urge to recover on growth and jobs in the EU and the need to invest in tomorrow’s energy network call for a new Energy Strategy to further deliver on those objectives.
Completing the internal energy market, achieving energy savings and promoting low-carbon innovation are the main vectors to reach the objectives of competitiveness, sustainability and security of supply.
The European Commission has recently launched a debate about the future energy strategy of Europe „Towards a Common Energy Policy 2011-2020”.
